POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Communications Consultant, Markets Communication, is responsible for media relations and public relations strategies to support business growth and advance Aetna's reputation in local markets. The individual will develop and execute a comprehensive plan that aligns with enterprise priorities. The coverage area will be roughly one-third of the country, but the individual also will provide media relations support nationally and for other regions as needed. In each measurable, market-specific plan, the individual will use regional/local assets leadership, business and other partners, including Aetna Foundation and other corporate social responsibility activities, Government Affairs, Marketing, etc. as appropriate to bolster the companys reputation and support growth in our commercial, Medicare and Medicaid lines of business. The individual will partner with enterprise business leads and communication colleagues to understand our evolving priorities, and if/how they would resonate in target markets.

Fundamental Components:

  • Identify and engage stakeholders both internal and external whose support is needed to accomplish goals.

  • Establish and/or continue to develop relationships with members of the media who will influence public perception of the company.

  • Develop communications strategies and plans using best practices, innovative ideas and audience insights.

  • Advance thought leadership and reputation to support business growth.

  • Ensure consistent messaging in all communications, and demonstrate strategic understanding of digital channels, including social media, to support communications needs.

  • Manage agency relationship(s) at the regional/local level.

  • Establish a system of measurement that captures market-specific results, while identifying best practices and areas for improvement.

  • Ensure communications are error-free, accurate, appropriately approved and consistent with Aetna's core values.

    BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE desired:

  • 7 to 10 years in a public relations role; corporate and/or agency experience a plus

  • Experience as a company spokesperson

  • Experience developing and executing successful communications programs

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to make complex concepts conversational

  • Proven track record of proactively identifying and pursuing relevant opportunities that resulted in increased audience awareness and understanding of core message(s)

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate with other professionals toward a common goal

  • Executive presence and savvy at gaining influence

  • Strategic thinking, flexibility, resourcefulness

  • Experience working in a large corporation, and in an industry undergoing complex change

    EDUCATION

    The highest level of education desired for candidates in this position is a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
