Job Description

Performs a variety of instrumentation decontamination, sterilization, and preventative maintenance tasks supporting perioperative services. Performs all functions of the Perioperative Support Assistant.

  1. Performs a variety of instrumentation and equipment decontamination, sterilization, and preventative maintenance tasks supporting perioperative services.
  • Disassembles simple and complex perioperative reusable instruments and equipment.

  • Uses appropriate sterilization method to decontaminate instruments and equipment. Differentiates between steam and sterrad supplies.

  • Operates washers, sterilizers, ultrasonic machines, steam and ethylene oxide sterilizers, and additional equipment during sterilization procedures.

  • Examines instruments and equipment for cleanliness, proper assembly and functionality.

  • Adheres to instrument count sheets for surgical sets and case carts.

  • Participates in preventative maintenance of instruments and equipment. Collaborates with bio-medical engineer, as needed.

  • Maintains perioperative sterilized instruments and equipment inventory. Covers and rotates trays and sets per sterile storage guidelines

  • Adheres to AORN, AAMI and Joint Commission standards (e.g. biological, chemical and mechanical monitoring) in the performance of duties.

  • Documents and maintains records of daily activities according to policies and procedures.

  1. Performs all functions of the Perioperative Support Assistant.
  • Participates in the preparation of OR prior to surgery.

  • Transports patients, supplies, equipment and specimens, as directed.

  • Receives, identifies and stages instrument trays based on procedure cards.

  • Assists healthcare team prior to and during surgery. Monitors each case to ensure adherence to infection control and sterilization standards.

  • Cleans OR and all related perioperative areas in accordance with established procedures.

  1. Adheres to safety and infection control policies. Demonstrates knowledge and skills in waste disposal and standard precautions.

  2. Utilizes Personal Protective Equipment as designated by established department policies and procedures.

  3. Performs related duties as required.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.

  • CRCST Certification, required.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within probationary period, required.

  • Successful completion of on-the-job training program, within probationary period, required.

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in a surgical instrument processing setting, required.

  • Ability to move trays up to 50 pounds and to stand throughout shift, required.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, and follow written and/or oral instructions.

  • Ability to be well organized and work under high pressure, required.
