Job Description

Provides reference and education services utilizing electronic and print resources. Develops training materials and instructs staff in the use of library services and resources. Assists in the planning and evaluation of library services. Develops collection of books, journals, databases and computer software. May train support staff and volunteers. Assists with resource sharing activities.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provides reference services for library users at assigned Libraries utilizing electronic and print resources, communicating with users through traditional as well as various technologies.

  • Performs thorough and timely searches of literature to locate information in response to specific questions.

  • Evaluates resources and potential resources to serve the needs of institutional staff and other library users in support of evidence based health care practice.

  • Provides instruction in the use of library resources and services. Conducts classes, orientations or mentoring sessions as needed. Develops and produces training materials, including web tutorials.

  • Collaborates with the Director in planning and evaluating library services. Prepares statistical and narrative reports as requested. Plans and/or implements specialized information products, needs assessments or outcomes research.

  • Collaborates with clinical, research and library staff in developing the library’s collection of online and print books, online journals, databases and computer software. Makes recommendations on new materials and reviews purchasing and licensing criteria.

  • Collaborates with library staff and necessary clinical topic experts in weeding library collections while working within established collection guidelines.

  • May train library support staff or volunteers in the use of generic software programs and on new procedures or equipment.

  • Assists with resource sharing activities including verification of requests and development of policies and procedures regarding resource access (interlibrary loan, document delivery and shared services of the health system).


  • Master’s Degree in Library Science, required.

  • Minimum of two (2) years library experience, preferably in a hospital or medical school setting, required.

  • Membership (or eligibility) in the Medical Library Association’s Academy of Health Information Professionals, preferred.

  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of content and formats of resources and experience in teaching library information literacy skills, required.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, required.
