Verizon Wireless Senior Wireless Device Engineer in Basking Ridge, New Jersey
What you’ll be doing...
As a key member of the Verizon HQ Device Technology team, you will own 4G LTE device evolution by providing technical leadership on LTE specification and features. You will be a subject matter expert on a variety of LTE technologies, create requirements and test plans, and provide technical direction to internal teams as well as external stakeholders.
Develop device requirements, test plans, and test processes to allow for the implementation of Layer 1 (physical Layer), Layer 2 signaling (e.g. PDCP, RLC, MAC), Layer 3 (e.g. IPv4 / IPv6, RRC, NAS) signaling, consistent with marketing, network and standards body specifications.
Proactively look for areas to improve requirements and test plans.
Interface with internal teams, device vendors, chipset vendors and network vendors within Verizon to develop Layer 2 and 3 call flows specific to VZW’s network implementation.
Use years of development experience to manage new technology trials and evaluate the trial results for deployment optimization.
Head the analysis of future LTE features to determine the impact to device functionality, performance and user experience.
Coordinate and negotiate appropriate legal agreements including NDA’s, General Purchase Agreements, and Statements of Work with multiple vendors.
Develop vendor selection strategies and statements of work including milestones, deliverables and payments in order to meet overall project schedules.
Provide technical expertise in LTE during cross-functional design reviews. Assume responsibility as the subject matter expert and single point of contact for all Verizon inquiries in the designated LTE areas.
Develop supplementary signaling and protocol test plans and test cases consistent with VZW defined device requirements and standards test specifications (e.g. 3GPP 36.523).
Evaluate Layer 1 / Layer 2 / Layer 3 test platform availability / roadmaps and make procurement decisions based on compliance to test plans, cost, availability and performance.
Work with internal and external labs to validate the radio / signaling / protocol test cases and associated test platforms.
Provide subject-matter expertise to evaluate test results for standards body signaling conformance, RF and Radio Resource Management test cases (e.g. 3GPP 36.523, 3GPP 36.521-1, 3GPP 36.521-3) and for VZW defined test cases (e.g. Supplementary Signaling Conformance / Data Retry, ) as necessary.
Proactively look for opportunities to improve and update test plans.
What we’re looking for...
You’ll need to have:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Computer Engineering, or four or more years of work experience.
Six or more years of relevant work experience.
Experience in the Telecommunications Industry.
Knowledge of LTE or GSM/UMTS, including protocol stack layers 1, 2, and 3 (PHY, MAC, RLC, PDCP, RRC, NAS, IP).
Even better if you have:
Ten or more years of experience in the Telecommunications Industry with a background in R&D and experience with modem manufacturers, handset manufacturers, network equipment manufacturers and/or mobile operators.
Experience designing to and evaluating 3GPP, GSMA and other industry standards documents.
Experience in new technology introduction and development.
Ability to evaluate processes and optimize to increase efficiency.
Demonstrated ability to take appropriate action to identify and resolve technical issues to closure, escalating appropriately as required.
Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication, organization and interpersonal skills. Capability to communicate complex, technical information clearly and concisely. Ability to communicate ideas and recommendations to all levels within the organization.
Capability to be a motivated self-starter who can take initiative and proactively solve problems before escalation.
Ability to work independently, efficiently and effectively under extreme time constraints and deliver results by given deadlines. Ability to multi-task several high priority initiatives simultaneously.
