Merck Associate Director, Payment Services Procurement in Upper Gwynedd, Pennsylvania

The Associate Director, Payments Services Procurement sits within the Procurement Center of Excellence in Merck’s Strategic Sourcing and Enterprise Services. The role reports to the Director of Travel, Meetings and Payments (TMP) Procurement and is responsible for the Global Payments category and directly supports the Travel and Meetings category strategy execution and management. Specifically, the responsibilities of the role involve the following:

  • Leading the Supply Strategy Council for Payments with responsibility for the development, execution and management of the category strategy, including management of Corporate Card Programs and other payment vehicles.

  • Establishing and leading cross-functional teams of business partners and stakeholders through Sourcing Management as a structured process to develop and deliver procurement strategies that create real value for the organization.

  • Delivering strong results in payments innovation, savings and other departmental objectives, such as attaining supplier rationalization and supplier diversity targets.

  • Stakeholder Management and Alignment – Ensure buy-in and collaboration with other business functions (Finance, Treasury, Source-to-Settle, Compliance, etc.) for initiatives, developing and supporting stakeholder initiatives, supporting profit planning process, facilitating achievement of business goals.

  • Leading Supplier, Category and Contract Management processes to deliver best possible value and performance.

  • Directly or indirectly managing internal and external resources.

  • Responsible for ensuring accuracy of TMP Spend Analyser, Buyer Book of Business and Transactional Efficiency.

  • Overall support of TMP, through execution of diverse category initiatives; spend analyses, strategy development, etc.

Primary activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Data Analytics, Reporting and Actionable Insights – Use data analysis to gain critical insights that drive the development of sourcing strategies and continuous improvement activities. Actively participate in relevant industry events.

  • Supplier Management – Liaise with Supplier Performance Management core team and TMP Lead to ensure TMP team meets / exceeds all supplier management expectations. Additionally, build relationships and manage key supplier performance against business requirements using proven processes to drive the realization of the full value of the key relationships.

  • Category Management – Support category management for subcategories and suppliers in the Travel, Meetings and Payments areas.

  • Strategy Creation – Work with cross-functional teams to create strategies, which both deliver quick wins and genuine innovative breakthroughs.

  • Sourcing and Contracting – Personally lead sourcing initiatives including RFX, RFP, and negotiations and contracting to put in place the right suppliers.

  • Strategy Implementation – Proactively manage all aspects of implementation including entry and exit of suppliers and the ensuing complex change management issues.

  • Continuous Improvement – Ensure that supplier relationships are set up for future continuous improvement and to lead review processes, which ensure delivery of on-going improvement.

  • Stakeholder Management and Business Sponsorship – Work in a way that positively engages the support of stakeholders using problem solving and proactive communication skills.

  • Business Requirements – Have a keen insight and understanding of business requirements on a 1-3-5 year horizon.

  • Results and Performance – The candidate will have strong analytical skills and experience, and be results-oriented.

  • Project and Change Management – Strong project management skills and a proven ability to manage change both internally and externally through to successful completion.

  • Diversity – Actively participate in achieving organization's supplier diversity goals.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor's Degree Required.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • 7 years in strategic procurement or related role.

  • Very strong analytical skills, ability to analyze large complex data sets to derive relevant intelligence in developing sourcing strategies or supporting negotiations

  • Proven success in developing and executing several global sourcing strategies

  • Proven ability to manage global suppliers

  • Strong communications and influencing skills at senior levels

  • Proven ability to collaborate with a wide variety of individuals, including senior management, stakeholders, team members, other departments and suppliers

  • Proven ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a dynamic environment

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Relevant expertise/experience in the Payments Procurement or in Source-to-Settle field.

  • Experience in sourcing and managing global corporate card programs.

  • Experience assessing, developing and implementing a variety of payment vehicles.

  • Broad base of indirect procurement category knowledge

  • MBA or advanced degree and / or relevant certifications desirable
