Apart of Merck's Supply Chain organization at the Vaccine Manufacturing facility in Durham NC, the Specialist, Buyer / Planner will be responsible for the purchase of BOM and non-BOM materials necessary to support all site manufacturing operations in alignment with the global vaccine forecast and site production requirements. The Specialist, Buyer/Planner supports the Integrated Process teams and will plan, create and/or release purchase orders to procure materials to support the production schedule; and work closely with suppliers to ensure timely deliveries. This position is responsible for monitoring raw material inventory levels at the Durham site; ensuring sufficient inventory is available to support manufacturing while managing inventory level financial targets.

Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Primarily responsible for creating, and/or releasing and maintaining purchase orders to support all IPT production and ancillary requirements as driven by demands conveyed through SAP.

  • Converts purchasing requisitions and releases purchase orders to suppliers for a wide range of materials.

  • Works with suppliers to ensure materials are delivered on time. Works closely with Durham, Elkton, Westpoint and contract labs to ensure testing and release are aligned with production need dates.

  • Identifies and communicates supply delays to downstream colleagues and planning manager.

  • Reviews MRP outputs and makes adjustments as required

  • Monitors inventory levels to avoid excess inventory, inventory shortages and/or inventory expirations

  • Supports Quality and Procurement in the resolution of supplier quality issues

  • Performs tasks associated with facility start up and new product introduction, including establishing new vendors, requesting quotes, and planning for development and PPQ batches.

  • Manages the expiring material review process and creates FA33’s for materials that require discard. Supports the inventory of questionable value (IQV) process and updates IQV in the SAP tool.

  • Provides input to the Vendor Change Notification (VCN) process and is trained as the backup data administrator for Supplier Transparency.

  • Secondary responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Working closely with VBF Operations and the VBF planner to ensure back up capacity in planning to support growing business needs.

  • Assists Finance and Procurement in the reconciliation of disputed invoices and payments to suppliers

  • Utilizes Lean Six Sigma principles and methodologies to minimize waste, reduce costs and shorten cycle times

  • Supports the Planning operation by entering bulk shipment information to the GSS database.

  • Provides second person verification of dilution models and MES planning data entries as needed.


  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Business, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Engineering or comparable field – OR – High School Diploma/GED (or higher) in conjunction with a minimum of three (3) years’ of working experience in Planning, Procurement, Supply Chain, and/or Materials Management.


  • Minimum one year’s experience working in Planning, Procurement, Supply Chain, Materials Management, Quality, and/or Operations

  • General knowledge of Planning and Purchasing processes as well as MRP/MPS principles and methodologies

  • Experience using SAP

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

  • Excellent planning, organizational, documentation and communication skills

  • Ability to work in a cross-functional teams and to manage complex projects and tasks

  • Produces/completes various assignments requiring analytical ability, independent judgment, creativity and problem solving skills


  • Experience in pharmaceutical industry or other GMP regulated industry

  • APICS or CPIM certification

  • Lean Six Sigma Knowledge and Experience

  • Collaborative team player with a strong positive attitude to maintain focus in difficult problem solving situations

  • Results oriented mindset capable of guiding teams to achieving desired project goals.
